Guate Guate Aquacate

Volcano hikes, women’s cooperative visits, colorful markets and dresses, delicious avocados, sunny cool highland adventures. This is Guatemala, Joy and I brought in New Year 2015 during a two-week visit. We started in Antigua, where we explored ruins, museums, and local volcanoes.

Lake Atitlan, surrounded by 7 volcanic peaks, the deepest lake in Central America, sits in a volcanic caldron. We loved the day hike, through fields of maize and avocado trees, near San Pedro.

One of our goals for the trip was to meet fair trade artisans, from which we’d be able to purchase new products for Joy’s business, Fair Anita. Over the course of the two week trip we met with 7 different artisan groups, learning about traditional weaving methods, and purchasing many products, mostly scarves, along the way.

One of the trip highlights was the Saturday market in Xela, one of the largest street markets in Central America.

When the big market became too overwhelming, we headed North for Chichicastenango, a smaller highland town, and found more markets! Vibrant, alive, happy are words that come to mind recalling our time in the markets in town around Chichi.

Hiking volcanoes, exploring small towns, sun bathing by Mayan alters at crater lakes, and hot springs . . .

Wherever we go, it’s always a pleasure to connect with fellow Global Shapers. We enjoyed an awesome dinner with 6 Managua Shapers, all up to amazing things!
